Frequently Asked Questions
Is the club suitable for beginners?
Chippenham 23 members range from competent club players to those who have played competitively at county and even national level. This is reflected in the success we have in the local leagues each year. Whilst there is a range of skill and age within the club, if you are new to playing badminton, or have never played and are looking to learn, then we would recommend seeking some coaching before coming along to the club.
Can I come along and try playing?
Yes, we would encourage any potential new members to come down for a club night or two to see whether our club will be right for you. For more details and any questions please use the form on our Contact Us page.
How much are membership fees?
Annual membership fees are reviewed at the club's Annual General Meeting and adjusted by the committee each year before the start of the winter season. For the 2024 - 2025 winter season fees are £180 (£90 for juniors and full time students). This can be paid as a lump sum at the start of the winter season, or split into two payments of £100/£80 payable end of August and end of December. Annual membership covers club nights as well as county and Badminton England association fees. Match fees, payable by those playing in our club teams, are paid in addition to membership fees, and are £5.50 for each home or away match played. For those who opt to continue playing through the summer, club nights revert to a pay as you go arrangement for the number of summer club nights attended.
How much are match fees?
If you play in a team you will also pay match fees for every match you play. For the 2024 - 2025 season fees are £5.50 per match, payable to the relevant team captain. All fees can be paid by cash or bank transfer.
How are teams selected?
The club selection committee meet before the start of the competitive winter season each year to decide what teams the club will be entering in the local leagues. They will also select who will play in the teams out of those who have expressed a desire to commit to a team that season. For those who are unable to commit to playing in a team, or who are not chosen as a regular team member, there are normally plenty of opportunities to cover occasional matches when regular team players are unavailable. There are also opportunities to play in cup matches and single day tournaments from time to time.
How does club night work?
Club nights are run according to a peg board where each player puts their peg on the board as they arrive. The first person picks three other players for a doubles game from the next 5 players on the board, and places the four playing pegs on a 'court' area of the board. The next player remaining in the queue on the board then picks from the following 5 players and so on until all available courts are filled. This continues throughout the evening, with players returning their pegs to the end of the queue as each game finishes.
